A remarkable journey from Scotland to Rhode Island, spanning four generations of dedication to quality, service, and community.
John Haxton, a drayman from Blair Gollary near Dundee, Scotland, made the courageous decision to immigrate to America during the great wave of the late 19th century. When a small inheritance came through, he brought his 16-year-old son Thomas with him. They landed in Boston and moved south to Providence, seeking opportunity in a new land.
Thomas Haxton went to work for a jewelry company in Olneyville, where his knack for business quickly got him noticed. Soon he was in charge of a large number of employees, most of them Italian immigrants. Tom kept good relations with these workers, helping them find employment and building lasting connections in the community. He married Florence McGuiness and decided to set out on his own.
When Prohibition was lifted in 1934, Thomas "Papa" Haxton seized the opportunity and opened the first Haxton's Liquor store in Olneyville, right where the people he had helped were loyal to him. The store was an immediate success, built on trust, quality products, and exceptional customer service.
Several of Tom's children followed him into the business. The Tollgate store became the first "Liquor Super Store" in Rhode Island and one of the first in the entire country. This innovative concept remains to this day on Bald Hill Road, Route 2 in Warwick — a testament to the Haxton vision and commitment to offering exceptional selection under one roof.
